Active April is the theme for this month's Action for Happiness and I'm all for staying active in life - physically, mentally and spirituallay. I'm also going to be using the calendar as a basis for some small challenges in the WLWA50 Daily 30 Exercise Facebook Group. Perhaps you might like to join us.
How does being active bring happiness?
Staying active isn’t just about fitness—it’s a powerful way to bring more happiness into your life. Here’s how movement can boost your joy:
1. Natural Mood Booster
Exercise releases endorphins, the “feel-good” hormones that reduce stress and boost your mood. Even a short walk can lift your spirits! For me I always feel uplift after being physically active. Even if I don't feel like working out or going for a run, I'm always glad that I made the effort to do it.
2. More Energy for What You Love
Regular movement increases your stamina, making it easier to enjoy hobbies, travel, or play with grandkids—without feeling exhausted.
3. A Confidence Boost
Feeling strong and capable in your body improves self-esteem. Achieving small fitness goals gives you a sense of accomplishment. One of our ladies in the WLWA50 Daily 30 Exercise Facebook group shared her recent achievement with the group and I could hear the happiness in her words.
Today, I had a major breakthrough! I asked a friend who is a trainer to show me how to safely use weights to strengthen the muscles in my arms. When I perfect this technique, it will be life-changing!
Another shared her win - I love that about the group that we are all cheerleaders for each other.
I did it -- finally! I managed to get to the pool and do 500m in 16 mins. That pace won't set any records but I was pleased.
4. Social Connection
Joining a walking group, yoga class, or dance session keeps you active while building friendships—an essential ingredient for happiness. Running with my daughter or running buddy over the last 12 years has brought me great happiness. Not only do I stay fit and healthy but I have formed valued friendships and a safe space to vent when we need to.
5. Better Sleep = Happier Days
Physical activity helps regulate sleep patterns, leading to deeper rest and brighter mornings.
6. Less Stress, More Calm
Movement helps reduce anxiety and tension. A mindful stretch or a swim can be a great way to clear your mind.
7. More Time Outdoors
Outdoor activities like hiking, gardening, or cycling connect you with nature, which is proven to boost mental well-being. Going for a mindfulness walk with no phones, taking in your surroundings and just being present can lift our mood.
8. A Sense of Playfulness
Dancing in the living room, trying a new sport, or playing with pets adds fun and laughter to your day.
9. Feeling Younger & More Vibrant
Movement keeps your body agile and your mind sharp, making you feel vibrant at any age.
10. Living Life Fully
Staying active isn’t about age—it’s about embracing life with enthusiasm and energy. Movement helps you keep up with the life you want to live!
I’ve just returned from a country lane walk. The sun is shining, the birds are singing, buds are bursting from the trees and hares are doing their mad thing. I couldn’t be happier.
